Celebrating Friendship, Art, and Legacy at the Diamond Lunch

The recent Diamond Lunch brought together a vibrant gathering of Old Stortfordians (OS) from across three decades, united in their shared history and the remarkable legacy of Walter Strachan. Hosted at the breathtaking Henry Moore Sculpture Gardens and Studio in Perry Green, the event served not only as a reunion but as a celebration of the longstanding friendship between Strachan and Moore.

With demand for tickets exceeding availability, the event proved to be a highly anticipated occasion. Special guest Geoffrey Strachan (GH,DBH, 44-53) son of Walter Strachan and a distinguished translator of foreign literature, travelled from Oxford to partake in the festivities. Geoffrey’s presence added a special personal touch to the event, paying homage to his father’s artistic and educational contributions.

The day unfolded under glorious spring sunshine, with guests enjoying guided tours of the stunning sculpture gardens. The College’s Headmaster, John Maguire, extended a warm welcome to attendees, sharing his personal journey to the College and outlining his vision for the future. Following the tours, guests gathered in the Visitor Centre for a delightful afternoon tea, an opportunity for laughter, reminiscing, and meaningful connections.

Honouring Walter Strachan: An Icon of Art and Education

Few names are as fondly remembered at Bishop’s Stortford College as Walter Strachan. A visionary linguist, poet, painter, calligrapher, and translator, Strachan dedicated over 40 years to education and artistic advocacy. Between 1924 & 1968 he taught English, French, German, and Italian, encouraging students to form their own opinions, appreciate beauty, and make connections between literature, visual art, and architecture. He held a deep admiration for Henry Moore’s work, forging a friendship that lasted over four decades.

Walter Strachan’s legacy at the College remains strong, with spaces dedicated to his contributions, including the Walter Strachan Art Centre, which continues to inspire students. His belief in the magic of artistic expression remains relevant today, as former pupils credit his teaching with shaping their careers in art history, education, and beyond.

The Diamond Lunch, now a biennial tradition, not only reflects the camaraderie among OS but also serves as a living tribute to Strachan’s impact on the College and its wider artistic community.

As guests departed, they carried with them the warmth of rekindled friendships, the inspiration of artistic beauty, and a renewed connection to the College education that helped shape their journeys.

Here's to many more reunions, celebrations, and cherished memories to come!

Geoffrey Strachan has generously donated copies of Walter’s memoir, Only Connect (RRP £30), offering a wonderful opportunity for interested OS to obtain a copy in exchange for a donation.
