Welcome to the Old Stortfordian Society Page

Welcome from OS President 2023-24 Steve Ross (GH, SHa, 65-72)

A warm welcome to The Old Stortfordian Society page. I very much look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at one of the events arranged for you during the year, which are described in the ‘Events’ section of this site.

One of the key initiatives of your OS committee this year will be working even closer with the School’s development office. We want to help them organise more events, and use the huge experience of our alumni to provide career support and mentor students.

Do please let me know if you can spare a little time helping us in either organising events, providing career advice or mentoring a student. We need volunteers like you, so do let me know on the email below if you can help!

Very best wishes

Steve

New OS Society Rules 2024

Over the past thirteen years the College Development Office has implemented a broad ranging communications and events programme which previously used to be supported by the OS Committee. As a result, what we do as a committee needs to change as we wish to work closer with the School Development Office to support their initiatives but also work in other areas where we both want to offer more opportunities to all our members.

With this in mind, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in May 2023 by Past President Chris Forster and myself on behalf of the OS, and School Head Kathy Crewe-Read, which set out the direction of travel to make all this possible, and who would do what to make it happen! With the MoU in place, your committee worked on refreshing the OS Rules over the summer and autumn to enable this new way of working - around 10 faces to face and online meetings.

These new rules are out for consultation until the end of February 2024 and voted on at the AGM – we do hope you feel able to support them. I do hope to see many of you there, but if you can’t make it, do please let us know how you wish to vote by sending us an email to osscommittee@gmail.com. The detail is included in the documents below, but the headlines are that we aim to create new volunteer ‘Networks’ in the fields of communications, sports, mentoring and careers, events and fundraising.

  3. Rule 10 enables a separate schedule of Role Descriptions, also viewable on the link below
  4. Rule 11 sets out the process for elections to the above roles which will be facilitated by the school. Members can be 4 years in role, and can take another role afterwards for a further 4 years if desired
  5. Finance gets a full treatment in Rule 18
  6. Quorum at an AGM is 15 and for rule changes 20 (Rules 25 and 30 respectively)
