Cyril Gray Championship 2024 Report

The Cyril Gray Championship is a scratch foursomes matchplay competition for golfers aged over 50 from 32 public schools played at Worplesdon Golf Club in Surrey. This year’s competition took place from 26th-28th June which turned out to provide the hottest weather of the summer so far.

Unfortunately this year’s draw was not kind to us with the other three teams in our section of the draw, Eastbourne, Epsom and Glenalmond, all being strong contenders. The Bishop’s Stortford team featured two good new players but was also suffering the absence of two of our stronger, experienced members.

Our first round match was played against Eastbourne which we lost 2½-½ putting us through to a Plate match against Glenalmond, former finalists in the competition. In this too we were defeated 2½-½.

Finals day of the competition also features a “Senior Cyril Gray” competition. This is a single round scratch foursomes stableford with both players being over 65 and having a combined age of 140. James Greenall and Bob Fell represented Bishop’s Stortford in this returning 24 points which would have been the winning score in 2023. However, they fell short on this occasion coming a very creditable 4th.
