9 intrepid golfers braved the early autumn mist and the M25 Monday morning traffic to attend the Society’s 2023 Autumn meeting at South Herts Golf Club  near Barnet. The weather, although dry, exhibited an early morning chill on our arrival which was soon dissipated by the hot drinks and excellent bacon rolls provided by the club before play began.

As a result of the long term impact of COVID this was our first ordinary society meeting in four years and, despite the low turnout, hopes were high for a return to an enjoyable and competitive day of sport which the society members have enjoyed throughout its history.

Past and present College Staff have enjoyed Associate Membership of the Society for many years but this year we have widened the criteria for membership to include anyone associated with the Stortfordian Foundation. This was done to address the dwindling member numbers which have made recruiting sufficient support for society days such a challenge over the last 2 years and it was great to welcome two new members to this event.

Playing in three groups of three, the main competition was an individual stableford for the Marcus Arnold Memorial Cup. There was also a secondary team stableford competition with the best two stableford scores on each hole to count for each of the three balls. Prizes were also on offer for Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin.

The end result was extremely close with James Greenall putting in a sterling score of 41 points off a course handicap of 11 just shading George Streeter with 40 points playing off 21.

The team scores were equally competitive with James, Duncan Smart and Tony Whitehead having 86 points just being pipped by George, Adam Moss and Edward Holman, also with 86 but winning on a countback of the last 6 holes. With Tim Smith, Alan Oakley and Sandy Barnard scoring 85 points it could not have been closer.

Nearest the Pin was won by George Streeter and the Longest Drive by Adam Moss.

An excellently prepared and presented meal followed the golf and it was universally agreed that the entire day had been most enjoyable.
