We have been contacted by a lovely gentlemen who has cherished the ownership of a beautiful leather Captain’s Chair for a number of years, a chair that interestingly has a College heritage.
Sadly, the time has come for him to find a new owner of the chair and he is very keen to try and connect the chair with its original heritage.
The striking chair boasts an engraving of:
Presented by the Boys of Bishop’s Stortford College
June 1928
The Foundation team have been unable to uncover any information about the heritage of the chair within the College or digital Stortfordian archives so we are hoping that our wonderful OS community might be able to provide some shed some history on the background of the chair. Lots of questions stand unanswered: Did the College boys of the time help to make the chair? Did they gift it in recognition of the retirement of a much respected member of staff or of the Governing Council? Did they gift it for some other reason?
The Stortfordian and Centenary Chronicle have failed to provide any answers – can you??
It was a long time ago but perhaps a story has been passed down through your family or you have come across mention in previous research?
If you know anything about the chair the Foundation team would love to hear from you and be able to pass the information on to the Chair’s owner, please contact them at foundation@bishopsstortfordcollege.org or on 01279 838348
If you might be interested in securing this piece of College history for yourself, purchasing the chair when the current owner imminently puts it up for sale – please contact the Foundation team and they will happily connect you with the current owner.
