On World Book Day 2025, we are thrilled to announce that OS Dr. Stephanie Howard-Smith (PP, WH,AH,TH, 96-09), a renowned Cultural Historian, Writer, and Animal History Consultant, has secured a remarkable book deal. Her upcoming publication, "Yap!: A Short History of Small Dogs," was the subject of an intense eight-way auction, with Granta Books emerging as the proud publisher.
About the Book: "Yap!" promises to be a captivating journey through the history of small dogs. From the convents of medieval Europe, where nuns secretly kept small dogs as companions, to the beloved pets of royals like King Charles and Queen Victoria, and even the modern-day pet influencers on social media, this book will explore the enduring bond between humans and their tiny canine friends.
Dr. Howard-Smith shares her excitement:
"I am thrilled that Yap! has found a loving home with Granta, and particularly delighted to be working with Laura to tell the history of little dogs and their humans from ancient times to the present day. The book is a love letter to humanity’s first true pets, and I’m looking forward to sharing stories of the favourite pets of royals, celebrities, and ordinary people alike. I hope readers will emerge from Yap! with a fresh appreciation of the dogs many of us love to love – but some love to hate."
We eagerly anticipate the publication of "Yap!" in 2027 and wish Dr. Stephanie Howard-Smith continued success in her writing career. For more information about the book deal click here & follow Stephanie on Instagram @doghistorian
