Chairman of the Bishop's Stortford History Society OS Tim Howard-Smith (GH,HH,66-75), encourage Stortfordians to join him for the 2023/24 event programme.
He draws attention to the special College connection to the talk on November 16th 2023, Excavating Roman Stortford (Repeat & Update) Daniel Firth MSc ACIfA - Fieldwork Project Supervisor, Oxford Archaeology.
Redevelopment of the Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre has led to a wealth of new information about the Roman settlement at Bishop’s Stortford. This talk will present some of the initial findings of the excavations carried out on the site in 2019 and 2022 along with working theories about the nature of this settlement, its place in the province and the people who lived there. Many OS of the time will remember that the College's Archaeological Society undertook a seven year dig from 1963-70 providing findings that have been passed to the team undertaking the more recent dig. Tim himself participated in the final 1970 dig, where the team uncovered a Roman era building on the south side of Stane Street. This discovery is now important in 2023 as it demonstrates that the Roman town was much larger than the archaeologists believed when they were excavating.
It is anticipated that demand for this talk will be high and tickets to non-members of the Historical Society will be issued in advance of the event - interested parties should keep an eye on their website for details bishopsstortfordhistorysociety.org.uk
We wish Tim and the History Society every sucess.
