OS Lee Taylor (GH,HH, 62-69) has kindly written in to share his memories of the opening of our iconic dining hall:
'I chanced upon the slide show, by Maggie Garrett, of the history of the College. The only slide of my time there showed the opening of the new Dining Hall in 1962. This coincided with my first term at BSC.
What will not be written in the history of the school is that, shortly after the opening, there was a protest organised by the boys (and there were only boys at that time) about the quality of the food being served. I recall being a treble in the school choir, assembling in the Memorial Hall before lunch to rehearse Haydn's Creation. A senior boy arrived before the music master and told us that we were all to be completely silent during lunch. We were. The silence was eerie, unprecedented and something which the staff, sitting on the pictured dais, found mightily disturbing.
I can't remember how the protest was resolved but the point seemed to have been taken by those in charge because the quality of the food improved.
As a postscript, at the end of term meal the Head Boy was deputed to toast the catering staff. When he uttered the famous words, "I give you the kitchen", a wag hidden somewhere among the multitudes responded with "You can keep them". He was never identified.
Happy days.
